Maori water rights claim not opportunist - advocate

An Auckland iwi says an interim Waitangi Tribunal report is right to dismisses some public criticism that a Maori water rights claim was opportunist.

The preliminary report recommends the Crown put a hold on its plan to sell shares in some state-owned assets until it sorts out Maori interest in water.

Ngati Te Ata claimant Roimata Minhinnick says Maori water rights have repeatedly been upheld by the tribunal, but ignored by the Government.

He says it was important the Waitangi Tribunal reported that the case wasn't opportunist.

Mr Minhinnick says it also offers a chance for the Government to fix the problem.
