Turangi street name changes proposed

Turangi-Tongariro Community Board is recommending a number of changes to street names in Turangi to reflect local Maori.

Fourteen streets and the names of three parks will be changed to incorporate Ngati Turangitukua whakapapa.

Turangi came into existence as a hydro town in the early 1960's and while street names were agreed in consultation with Maori, the dropping of "Te" off the front and the refusal to use some suggestions has rankled with Maori.

The changes were first mooted in a 1998 Treaty of Waitangi Settlement.
