Inter-iwi tensions worry some Muriwhenua

6:32 am on 12 September 2012

One of the Muriwhenua iwi leaders attending a Waitangi Tribunal hearing into the return of Crown land says his members want an end to the tension between other tribes at the inquiry.

Ngati Kahu and Te Rarawa are asking the Tribunal to use its powers to force the Crown to return state-owned enterprise property in the Far North.

But both are accusing each other of a land grab.

Ngati Kahu asked the tribunal to use its powers to force the Crown to return land held for the settlement of its Waitangi Treaty claim, including state-owned Landcorp farms and land that has been sold to private owners since the claim was upheld.

And Te Rarawa chairman Haami Piripi has applied to the tribunal for binding orders returning six properties to his iwi, which is set to sign its deed of settlement with the Government in October after years of negotiation.

Ngai Takoto is another of the five Muriwhenua iwi, and its leader Rangitane Marsden says descendants just want to move forward sooner rather than later.

He says iwi members have made clear their aspirations to settle their claims.
