Maori leaders reach out to unions

9:49 pm on 18 September 2012

A hui has been held in Tauranga to discuss the potential for a stronger relationship between Maori leaders and the Council of Trade Unions.

About 200 union members and iwi leaders from around the country gathered at the hui on Tuesday.

The Maori vice president of the Council of Trade Unions, Syd Keepa, says one way to improve the relationship would be to form a lobby group to specifically represent Maori workers.

He says work to build a stronger relationship - to improve the lives of Maori workers - has been in the pipeline for some time.

Mr Keepa says it is important to also not forget Pacific Islanders because they have similar unemployment statistics to Maori.
