Talks begin to relocate meeting house at closing school

Discussions are being held over the future of a small tribal meeting house based at a Bay of Plenty college that's due to close.

Rangitahi College in Murupara will close in December and merge with another local primary school to become Murupara Area School.

Rangitahi College principal Dawn Mitai-Pehisays talks have been held with local kaumatua about what should happen to the meeting house, Tuwhare.

The house, a smaller replica of the original Tuwhare wharenui that was dismantled at Rangitahi Marae in 1929, was built at Rangitahi College some time after the 1930s.

Ms Mitai-Pehisays two hapu told the hui that Tuwhare should return to their respective marae because the whare has direct ancestral connections to both of them.

She says all six hapu will return to their people to discuss the matter further.

Ms Mitai-Pehi hopes a decision about relocating the house will be made by mid-October.
