A four-day hikoi begins in Southland on Friday for young descendants of the Ngai Tahu iwi.
About 20 school students aged 15 to 17 from throughout New Zealand will visit the Ngai Tahu marae in Bluff, learning the history to build their cultural understanding of the tribe.
Ngai Tahu kaumatua Sir Tipene O'Regan says a group of Ngai Tahu university students will run the hikoi which mostly consists of outward bound-style outdoor activities.
Sir Tipene says it makes more sense, as they will be better able to relate to them than older kaumatua.
The hikoi will also coincide with the 14th anniversary of the Ngai Tahu settlement on Monday.
