ERO seeks urgent repairs to girls' hostel

Education Review Office staff say urgent repairs need to be made to the hostel of a Maori boarding school for girls in the Rangitikei district.

Turakina Maori Girls' College in the town of Marton, northwest of Palmerston North, accommodates 84 students.

An ERO report says the physical condition of the hostel requires urgent attention, and improvements should be made to both the building and furnishings.

College principal Terehia Channings accepts work needs to be done.

She says buildings have to be regularly upgraded and maintained, because the facilities are a point of attraction for schools, especially one which takes boarders.

Mrs Channings says she can't justify putting up boarding fees if facilities aren't improved.
