Tauranga campus seen as opportunity

Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi in Whakatane says setting up a new tertiary campus in Tauranga will help meet the needs of Maori students.

The wananga, Waikato University and Bay of Plenty Polytechnic have formed a partnership and propose to build a new campus in an effort to stop young people leaving the region.

Awanuiarangi currently provides a range of programmes, such as Maori tourism, teaching and Te Reo Maori.

Wananga chief executive, Graham Hingangaroa Smith, says the aim is to provide educational opportunities in Maori topics.

He says the region needs to have a university and Tauranga would be a suitable location because it's a city which keeps growing.
