Far North iwi's Treaty claim settled

5:30 pm on 27 October 2012

The Government has signed a $21 million Treaty of Waitangi settlement with a Far North iwi.

Treaty Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson says the people of Ngāi Takoto were left virtually landless by the actions of the Crown in the 19th century.

The minister, who signed the agreement in Kaitaia, says the financial settlement along with the return of some culturally significant sites will give the tribe a strong foundation for improving the social and economic well-being of its members.

He says the settlement will be shared with other Far North iwi.
