Govt seeks talks with Treaty deal critics

9:25 pm on 30 October 2012

The Government is seeking a meeting with a group objecting to a Treaty of Waitangi settlement at Palmerston North.

Ko Te Pou Marangatahi O Rangitane Ki Manawatu says the Crown should not be dealing with an urban authority called Tanenuiarangi Manawatu Incorporated.

The group argues that the authority does not represent the true families of Rangitane.

Tanenuiarangi Manawatu Incorporated was due to initial its Deed of Settlement on 30 October, but the event was postponed.

A spokesman for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson says the hold-up is not due to objections by the group.

However, Mr Finlayson has asked Crown officials to secure a meeting with Ko Te Pou Marangatahi O Rangitane Ki Manawatu to talk about their challenge.
