More taxpayer cash sought for Maori homes

A company specialising in building homes on customary land says the Government needs to pour more money into the Social Housing Fund.

It has $13.8 million of its budget on offer over the next three years to housing firms that can build rental accommodation on Maori land.

But one Maori housing company says the Putea Maori fund needs a boost. Victoria Kingi from Papakainga Solutions Ltd says the money is soon spent.

She says nearly $14 million sounds like a lot, but it's over three years - which breaks down to about $4.5 million per year.

Ms Kingi says the last project on which she worked resulted in 10 houses being built at a cost of $2.2 million - which would be half of the Maori portion of the Social Housing Fund.
