Iwi intervention for academic boost

6:30 am on 7 November 2012

A tribal education group says iwi intervention will lead to improved Maori student achievement showing up in national statistics in about five years' time.

Nga Kaikokiri Matauranga says iwi, hapu and whanau are doing their bit to help raise the prospects of rangatahi.

Tribes say they are investing significantly in numeracy and literacy programmes - and working with local schools.

Awanui Black, a spokesperson for Nga Kaikokiri Matauranga, says runanga are stepping in stop failure.

He says two thirds of Maori students won't succeed unless tribes come to their rescue.

Nga Kaikokiri Matauranga is the education group mandated by 57 iwi.
