Hapu gives olive branch to North Shore people

Updated at 8:05 pm on 16 November 2012

A central Auckland hapu says it's willing to work with Devonport residents over the future of land the sub-tribe's seeking to buy there.

A Treaty of Waitangi settlement for Ngati Whatua o Orakei included the Crown's offer of several blocks of naval land at Narrow Neck beach in Devonport.

The hapu will use the $18 million settlement to buy the 3.2ha of land before leasing it back to the Government.

Several Devonport residents fought the deal at a Maori Affairs Select Committee hearing into the issue earlier this year, pleading with the Government to offer cash or other land instead.

Ngati Whatua o Orakei Maori Trust Board trustee Ngarimu Blair says the hapu will work to address residents' concerns.

The sale of the land is expected to go through early next year.
