A name has been selected for a new rural Bay of Plenty area school in Murupara that's due to open at the beginning of the next school year.

It's to be called Te Awatea o Murupara, inspired by a Ministry of Education project, Ka Awatea, tasked with looking at educational community opportunities.

At a community meeting on Thursday night, the establishment board of trustees of the Murupara Area School, which is charged with setting up the school, announced the new name.

The board says Te Awatea means the promise, the dreams and the desires of the community.

The school is merging with Rangitahi College, which will close next month.

The board plans to apply to the Ministry of Education to endorse the new name.
