Maori King calls for tribal leadership to step down

10:26 pm on 23 November 2012

The Maori King wants his tribal leaders to step down from their roles and to seek re-election from Waikato-Tainui people.

In a letter to all tribal descendants, Kingi Tuheitia is critical of infighting within the two leadership groups - the parliament, Te Kauhanganui, and the tribal executive, Te Arataura, since the mid-1990s.

He describes the leadership of the groups as reckless and shameful.

His review covers past and present infighting between members - and suggests that tribal money has been wasted taking leadership squabbles to court.

Kingi Tuheitia's letter - in the run-up to a Te Kauhanganui and Te Arataura hui on Sunday - talks about the leadership struggle between the chair of Te Kauhanganui, Tania Martin, and the former head of Te Arataura, Tukoroirangi Morgan.

Mr Morgan left his role earlier in the year after he failed to be re-elected.

Kingi Tuheitia says that despite Mr Morgan's departure the power struggle between the two tribal groups continues.

He supports Mr Morgan contest the Kauhanganui chairmanship at the hui.

Mr Morgan has said separately that he aims to restore order within Waikato-Tainui.

The current chair of Te Arataura, Tom Roa, has declined to comment until he's sought direction from the people.

Te Manu Korihi is awaiting a response from Tania Martin.
