Maori health provider runs out of money

A Maori health service at the top of the South Island is to shut down.

Te Rapuora o te Waiharakeke has been running for 26 years in the Nelson area and is to close as it has run out of money.

However, funding for its services is secure and arrangements are being made for new providers to take over the work it had carried out.

These services include mental health support and rongoa mirimiri - or gentle massage.

Manager of Te Rapuora o te Waiharakeke, Aroha Metcalf, says it needed a capital injection.

Te Rapuora was part of a five-provider proposal to deliver Whanau Ora, but it was not successful.

Ms Metcalf says it is hoped her 31 staff will get jobs with the new providers.
