Iwi response team suggested for future disasters

The leader of the environmental recovery programme for the Rena crisis says Bay of Plenty iwi could establish a response team to consult with authorities in the event of another disaster.

Catherine Taylor was the director of Maritime New Zealand when the container ship Rena ran aground off the Tauranga coast.

She says she has asked iwi to consider what could have been done better.

Ms Taylor says a response team would provide one point of call for people who come to assist in the disaster to talk to iwi about cultural issues and what can be done to assist and support them.

She says if a team had been established, it would have assisted efforts in the early days as iwi say they had to fight their way in to be included.
