Ngati Pukenga initials deed of settlement

Tauranga iwi Ngati Pukenga is on its way to settling its grievances with the Crown. The tribe has initialled its deed of settlement with Government ministers.

The Crown will also apologise for invading and confiscating tribal lands and for making things worse by failing to respect the rangatiratanga of Ngati Pukenga in its remaining lands.

The deed of settlement includes financial and commercial redress of $5 million.

The Crown will also acknowledge the tribe's links to a number of areas, including Manaia Block, and hundreds of thousands of dollars will be paid for marae and cultural revitalisation.

As part of the agreement, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment will be instructed to work with the iwi to help create economic opportunities for its people.
