Lessons need to be learned from Rena incident

A resident of Matakana Island says lessons should be learnt from the container ship Rena running aground on a reef off the coast of Tauranga, more than a year ago.

Oil and container debris from the Rena washed ashore at Matakana Island, the home of about 260 people, and debris is still being found.

Some residents are expecting things such as plastic beads to continue to appear on the beach for a while yet.

Nessie Kuka, from Matakana Island, says if the Government doesn't introduce measures such as shipping lanes, it's very likely another accident like the Rena will occur.
