Ownership of oil and gas reserves not part of deal

2:28 pm on 23 December 2012

Three Taranaki iwi groups have been shut out of owning oil and gas reserves.

The agreements with Ngaruahine, Te Atiawa and a letter of agreement with Taranaki iwi, were signed on Saturday.

Treaty Negotiations Minister Chris Finlayson said control of oil and gas is not something the Crown is willing to give up.

Mr Finlayson said there may be opportunities for iwi members to work in the oil industry.

He said the parties will now negotiate towards fully developed deeds of settlement.
