Nga Kaikokiri Matauranga, an iwi education advocacy organisation, says the best present that Maori parents can give to their children this Christmas, is the gift of education.
Spokesperson Awanui Black said sadly many Maori families who live in poverty pin their hopes on winning Lotto, when education is the ticket they should be putting under the Christmas tree.
He said too many whanau are hanging out to win money as a way of climbing out of being destitute, but it's not going to happen.
Mr Black said it is tough for many families finding the money to pay for food and their bills.
However, he said the education message needs to stay in their minds all the time, if they are to build a better future for themselves.
