Positive government relationships crucial: Ngati Rangi

A Central Plateau iwi is happy with the positive relationships it's forged with various government agencies in the lead up to negotiating with the Crown over its Treaty Settlement.

The Ngati Rangi Trust in Ohakune is seeking a mandate to represent the iwi in Treaty settlement negotiations with the Crown.

It will hold a series of nine mandating hui across the country next month and is calling on iwi members to register on its database.

Trust manager Che Wilson says the tribe realised it had to make some organisational improvements to operate more effectively and efficiently - with or without any financial compensation from the Crown.

He says Ngati Rangi is fortunate to have amicable relationships with central government, the Manawatu-Whanganui Regional Council and the Ruapehu District Council.

Mr Wilson says at the conclusion of their Tribunal Hearings in 2007 the tribe made a deliberate decision to re-organise its structure and governance so that it is not solely dependant on any Treaty settlement money to keep itself afloat.

He says since doing that the relationships with various government agencies have grown from strength to strength which bodes well for the future as Treaty partners.
