Action needed on hui recommendations - convenor

7:04 pm on 7 February 2013

The convenor of a two day planning hui for the people of Waikato-Tainui iwi, says it's important action is taken on recommendations made at the gathering.

Tukoroirangi Morgan says more than 700 people attended both days of the hui on Turangawaewae marae in Ngaruawahia, which finished on Wednesday afternoon.

He says it included addresses by a range of Maori business leaders, plus frank and honest discussions about how the tribe needs to operate in the future.

Mr Morgan says the hui was magnificent, with those who attended unanimous about the need for change.

He says the people want to move beyond the scraps which have occurred between the two competing boards.

Mr Morgan says the tribe has assets of $800 million and ways have to be found to make sure that the wealth trickles through to the people, and that there's a concentration on training and jobs.

He says Waikato-Tainui is a tribe on the move and its operations have to be more strategic and focussed.
