Tuhoe kaumatua Tame Iti says he'll be part of his tribe's future - now that he's been freed from prison.

The activist was released on parole on Wednesday morning, after serving a third of his two-and-a-half year sentence in jail for his involvement in military style camps in Te Urewera National Park, in 2007.

Tuhoe is this year due to sign its Treaty settlement with the Crown - which will include Government support for the iwi to deliver its own health, housing and education services.

Tame Iti says he's right behind the leaders of the iwi, saying he is one of the participants working to move forward and supports the ongoing dialogue with the Crown.

He says there's a huge plan ahead to build a future for the Tuhoe people.
