A safety committeeis oversee a Rotorua lake where an iwi group pushed the council to unlock a gate to the public.

A ramp at Laka Rotoiti's Okawa Bay was opened in December, after pressure from Ngati Pikiao Environmental Society - which wrote to Rotorua District Council and other groups.

The council launched plans in December to start talks about setting up a committee, which among things would consider how to ensure public safety on the lake due to the presence of speed boats.

It said that goal's become a reality through efforts of several groups, including the council, the Bay of Plenty Trailer Yacht Squadron and Ngati Pikiao.

It said monitoring by the groups have shown good results and shown little traffic problems on the lake.

The council said the groups involved have agreed to keep the committee operating on an informal basis
