Maori farms running low on feed amid drought

7:30 pm on 7 March 2013

A chain of Maori farms in the King Country says it has a few weeks worth of feed left, as it grapples with the dry spell.

Tiroa and Te Hape Trusts have 11,000 hectares of land and about 120,000 sheep and beef cattle in Waikato - one of several areas officially in drought.

The chairman of the trusts Hardie Pennie says the farm managers are coping - for now.

He says the drought is causing problems, but there's enough feed - or grass - for about three weeks.

Mr Pennie says they grow swedes, which they could also feed to the animals.

He says they haven't reached the stage where they need to put their hands up for Government assistance.
