6:38 am on 8 March 2013

A group representing Maori interests in broadband is attempting to find new uses for marae - including playing a key role in Civil Defence.

With hundreds of marae full of mattresses and equipped with good kitchens, Nga Pu Waea believes they could form the backbone of civil defence response.

Antony Royal said they're working on setting up a trial.

He said there's a plan to do a trial in Auckland with marae that have good internet connections.
