Marae urged to have say on quake-prone buildings

6:32 am on 21 March 2013

The Crown body charged with protecting heritage buildings says it's concerned about the future of marae - and how well they would stand up in an earthquake.

The Historic Places Trust says many toilets and wharekai, or dining halls, have been built using unreinforced concrete blocks.

It has written to iwi urging them to make submissions on the Government's earthquake-prone building proposals.

There's a suggestion that all buildings would be assessed within five years and, if quake-prone, be strengthened within 10 years of assessment - or otherwise be demolished.

The trust says it's concerned about the impact the proposals might have on marae and whether they would survive.

It says marae trustees also face making decisions about funding repair or demolition.

Submissions on the Government's seismic assessment plan have closed, but Building and Construction Minister Maurice Williamson says he'd still be happy to hear from tribes.
