Mana Party wants race relations appointment terminated

7:54 pm on 21 March 2013

The Mana Party's president is calling for Dame Susan Devoy's appointment as Race Relations Commissioner to be terminated.

Dame Susan wrote a newspaper article last year that was critical of what she called the political shenanigans of Waitangi Day.

Annette Sykes says she is writing to the Governor-General and Minister of Justice to complain that someone with a racist viewpoint could be appointed to the commissioner's role.

Ms Sykes says the appointment breaches the Human Rights Act, which requires commissioners to have knowledge of the Treaty of Waitangi and an understanding of race relations in New Zealand.

She is also asking for an investigation into the appointment, saying she is concerned that it was politically motivated and did not follow due process.

The Justice Minister is defending the appointment, saying Dame Susan's comments about Waitangi Day are perfectly acceptable.
