The chief executive of Maori Television is happy a bill that will allow it to broadcast after the switch to digital transmission has passed its first reading in Parliament.

The Maori Television Service Amendment Bill on Thursday passed its first reading.

The digital switch over will take place in December.

Maori Television chief executive Jim Mather says the service was probably expected to only ever have one channel.

But he says nine years later, it has two channels and it is launching a range of online resources next week.
