An investigation into the Ministry of Education's handling of school closures and mergers is being applauded by a Christchurch kura.
Chief Ombudsman Dame Beverley Wakem has opened the investigation.
She says she will look at recent closure and merger consultations, including the process under way in Christchurch.
There are plans to close seven schools and merge 12 others.
One of two Maori immersion schools in the city has been asked to move to a new site but is refusing to budge.
The chairperson of Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Waitaha, Christina Rask, said news of the investigation has made her feel emotional and a bit riri (angry) because it's taken this long for someone to listen to her school and others in Christchurch.
Ms Rask says the investigation is long overdue.
The inquiry is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
