Trust seeks answers from officials over new road

7:48 pm on 29 April 2013

Te Arawa Lakes Trust plans to question local government officials about the impact of a proposed new expressway near Lake Rotorua.

The New Zealand Transport Agency says its preferred path for the Rotorua Eastern Arterial would run from the airport close to the edge of the lake towards Sala Street.

The agency says the highway could affect water quality and pose a concern for iwi that assert kaitiakitanga over the lake.

Te Arawa Lakes Trust chair Toby Curtis says it plans to bring that issue up at the next meeting of the Rotorua Lakes Strategy group to be held in June or July.

The group is made up of representatives from the trust, the regional council and district council.

Dr Curtis says he wants an assurance from local government officials that the new road won't have a long-term impact on the lake.
