Marae hosted thousands at tangi

The tangi of Parekura Horomia was the biggest that its host marae has seen in decades and involved the provision of hundreds of beds for mourners.

The former Maori Affairs Minister and long-serving Labour MP died last Monday, aged 62.

He was buried on Saturday after a four-day tangi at Hauiti Marae in Tolaga Bay, north of Gisborne.

The kitchen organiser at the pa, Michelle Tangohau-Collis, says it is the biggest tangi she's seen there in her lifetime and about 4500 people were catered for each day.

She says manuhiri (visitors) and locals contributed by bringing in seafood, fruit and vegetables.

The marae's accommodation co-ordinator, Huia Allan, says the haukainga (people of the pa) provided many beds.

She says about 500 people were accommodated with the help of affiliated marae.
