7:02 am on 13 May 2013

The Mana Party aims to win the Ikaroa-Rawhiti electorate after announcing it will stand a candidate for the by-election

It confirmed on Friday morning that it will be fighting for the seat, which was made vacant by the death of Labour MP Parekura Horomia.

A by-election will be held on 29 June.

Mana Party leader Hone Harawira says he has had several calls urging the party to stand a candidate.

He says Mr Horomia's death leaves a huge void and Mana intends to find somebody with levels of energy to match.

Mr Harawira says the party is seeking a person who's hardworking, well-known and is prepared to put in the hours - all qualities possessed by Mr Horomia. He says they should also be committed to their community.

Mr Harawira says the electoral race is wide open.

He says the electoral seat belonged to Mr Horomia not Labour, and he thinks his party can win the seat.

Mr Harawira says the party has left the door open to people in the electorate who want to stand for the Mana Party.

A candidate is expected to be announced by 22May.
