The Maori party has announced its candidate for the Ikaroa Rawhiti by-election, the seat made vacant by the death of the Labour MP Parekura Horomia.

Na Rongowhakaata Raihania, has been chosen at a selection hui held at Ruahapia Marae at Waipatu, in Hastings to contest the seat on 29 June.

Mr Raihania says he has been inspired and influenced by his father, who devoted his life to his community after serving in the Maori Battalion C Company in 1944.

Maori party co-leader Pita Sharples says Mr Raihania is experienced in tribal leadership, advocating for workers' rights, Maori health, corrections, education and Treaty negotiations.
