The Maori Party candidate for the Ikaroa Rawhiti by-election says tensions within the party over leadership are expected to be resolved very soon.

Na Rongowhakaata Raihania will challenge for the seat.

In January, Te Ururoa Flavell made public his intention to challenge Pita Sharples as co-leader.

Dr Sharples has said Mr Flavell has threatened to leave the party if he is not given a leadership position, but Mr Flavell denies any such ultimatum.

Mr Raihania, a prison officer, said these tensions are close to being sorted out.
