Prison officer to represent Maori Party in by-election

A prison officer who is once again running to represent the constituency of Ikaroa-Rawhiti says if he becomes an MP, he'd use all of his skills learned on the job in jail.

Na Raihania has been selected by the Maori Party to stand in the eastern Maori electorate.

A by-election will be held at the end of June.

The late Labour MP Parekura Horomia won the seat in 2011, leaving Na Raihania in second place.

The Hawke's Bay prison officer says he would like to serve his community, including those behind bars.

He says the best way to help men and women in jail is to get them in to work - so the next generation does not end up in prison.

Mr Raihania says Maori Party policy such as providing cadetships and apprenticeship is a good way to help the whanau of people who've been sent to prison.

Mr Raihania says he would like to help build on those policies.
