Ministry sets new targets for meeting Maori needs

7:42 pm on 21 May 2013

Te Puni Kokiri - the Ministry of Maori Affairs - has set itself several new targets to ensure government departments are meeting the needs of Maori.

Among the checks, officials will look at how well the Maori perspective is promoted across local and central government and how well claimant groups are supported through - and after - Treaty settlements.

They will also examine the level of support for the growth in Maori leadership and how well iwi and hapu are considered in ministerial decision-making, as well as how well Maori needs and aspirations are being considered in social and economic policy.

The details are published in Te Puni Kokiri's Statement of Intent, which outlines the ministry's intentions over the next three years.
