Claudette Hauiti, of Ngati Porou and Nga Puhi, took her seat in Parliament on Wednesday.
The new National MP has taken over from Aaron Gilmore, who left after criticism of his conduct at a hotel.
Ms Hauiti, who lives in Mangere, has been working as a business consultant to independent Maori television production houses and iwi organisations.
She says she wants to work with Maori, small businesses and women's organisations.
