Henare angry over 'appalling' cartoon

8:17 pm on 30 May 2013

National MP Tau Henare says he's angry about a newspaper cartoon which appears to show Polynesian parents and how they're benefiting from the Government's breakfast in schools programme.

The cartoon in the Marlborough Express suggests that the Government's boosted breakfast scheme is great news for parents, who will spend their cash on cigarettes and gambling - instead of food.

Race Relations Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy is calling the cartoon "appalling", but not racist.

Mr Henare says his people are being picked on and asks what have Maori done to deserve the treatment by media.

He says in 2013, he would have thought people would be able to have a better discussion than we are having now.
