Breakers spread positive message to Gisborne youth

A Gisborne Maori health provider is treating local basketball fans - by bringing the Breakers to town for three days in June.

Turanga Health says it wants to inspire rangatahi (young Maori people) to become amazing adults and community champions, and the Breakers are positive role models - especially when it comes to making the right choices around alcohol and drugs.

The Auckland-based team will share their messages around the importance of family, balance, respect, sacrifice and belief in yourself.

And Dwayne Tamatea of Turanga Health says the team presents those themes in a relaxed, often hilarious way, all the while teaching rangatahi about basketball and life.

The Turanga Health Breakers tour runs from 16-18 June.
