Labour re-allocates Horomia's party responsibilities

Labour Party Maori roles held by the late Ikaroa-Rawhiti MP, Parekura Horomia, have been re-allocated.

Party leader David Shearer has announced that Shane Jones will become Maori Affairs spokesperson, while Rino Tirikatene will take over the responsibility of the Treaty negotiations portfolio.

Mr Shearer says Mr Jones expressed an interest to take on more work.

He says Shane Jones is a fluent Te Reo Maori speaker who will provide real guidance on Maori issues.

Mr Shearer says giving Rino Tirikatene the portfolio of Treaty of Waitangi will give him a chance to grow.

He says Mr Tirikatene shows promise and has served his electorate of Te Tai Tonga - which covers the South Island and parts of the lower North Island - well.

Parekura Horomia died at the end of April.

A by-election for his electorate will be held on 29 June.
