Maori language funding round opens in July

7:19 pm on 10 June 2013

Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Maori - the Maori Language Commission - wants to hear from community groups and people who wish to run Te Reo Maori workshops.

They're being urged to apply for the next round of Ma Te Reo funding.

Ma Te Reo is a contestable fund for community language projects that was established in 2001 to contribute to local level Maori language revitalisation.

The fund distributes $1.8 million annually in the form of conditional grants to iwi, hapu, whanau, Maori organisations and individuals.

It was also given an extra $2.5 million in this year's budget, as part of the Government's drive to boost Maori language revitalisation projects.

Te Taura Whiri chief executive Glenis Phillip-Barbara says the Commission is glad to be able to open the funding round at the beginning of Maori language week which starts on the 1 July.

The funding round closes in 9 August.
