The Transport Agency is offering solutions to reduce harm to Maori traditional lands, which a major Rotorua roading project will cut through.

The Rotorua Eastern Arterial will run from State Highway 30 - from the city's airport close to the edge of Lake Rotorua towards the city.

Ngati Te Roro o Te Rangi and Ngati Hurunga Te Rangi say they don't want the road to proceed partly because they worry it will cut access to traditional land in Ngapuna.

An area of the suburb is used to harvest sulphur for medicine.

Transport Agency Bay of Plenty State Highways manager Brett Gliddon said one solution would be to redirect the eastern arterial route.

He said one suggestion is to take the road away from Ngapuna and instead build it closer to the existing Te Ngae Road.
