Rotorua council to improve relations with two tribes

10:20 pm on 9 July 2013

Rotorua district council wants to improve relationships with two local tribes - which the council was found to have misled.

Te Manu Korihi reported in June that Ngati Makino and Ngati Pikiao had won legal costs after taking a case relating to the council's consultation process over building a wastewater plant at Lake Rotoma, to the Environment Court.

The court found that the tribes were misled.

Rotorua district council is now reviewing the way it deals with iwi.

Mayor Kevin Winters says the council has already formulated agreements with most iwi, but plans for more.

He says the council hasn't yet established a memorandum of understanding with either Ngati Pikiao and Ngati Makino, but that he aims to do so.
