Te Arawa to meet officials over mineral exploration

6:32 am on 12 July 2013

Te Arawa has secured a meeting with New Zealand Petroleum and Mineral officials to discuss tendering out permits for mineral exploration within its rohe.

Earlier in the year, New Zealand Petroleum and Mineral board contacted 97 iwi, hapu and councils in the Taupo volcanic zone.

It covers areas such as Tokoroa, and parts of the Taupo and Rotorua districts.

Te Arawa missed the board's deadline at the end of May to have a say.

But a spokesperson for a collective of Te Arawa organisations, Te Taru White, said it lobbied officials to arrange a time to sit down and talk about the proposal.

He says a hui a iwi has been organised for Saturday at Tamatekapua marae in Rotorua.
