Taiwan deal seeks to strengthen indigenous ties

For the first time ever, a trade agreement sets out to promote links between Maori and the indigenous people of Taiwan.

The New Zealand Government last week entered into an economic cooperation agreement to boost trade ties with Taiwan.

But beyond that the agreement includes a chapter on indigenous cooperation, encouraging a closer relationship between the native people of both countries.

Trade Minister Tim Groser says it draws on the unique connections between Maori and the indigeous people of Chinese Taipei.

Mr Groser says the agreement will provide enhanced opportunities for cultural and economic cooperation.

Several scientific studies suggest that Maori originate from Taiwan.
