'Some Cabinet support' for brothers' compo deal

8:52 am on 16 July 2013

The head of the Maori Affairs Select Committee, Tau Henare, says some Cabinet ministers support compensating two brothers who received life-changing injuries in the defence force.

The committee has recommended that the state provide payouts to burns victim Damien Nepata, who was hurt when the tank he was driving overturned in Waiouru, and his tetraplegic brother George, who fell from a stretcher during an army exercise in Singapore.

Tau Henare says there's nothing more his group of MPs can do and it is up to the Government to decide whether to sign off on a compensation deal.

He says he personally would compensate them, because they joined the army with the sole intention with protecting every family in New Zealand.
