Te Runanga o Tupoho in Whanganui says a new recycling centre in the city will provide its iwi members with more jobs.
The plant, situated on Maori owned land on the site of the old Wanganui prison on Maria Place Extension was opened at midday on Wednesday by Environment Minister, Amy Adams.
Tupoho chairman Ken Mair says the centre, a partnership between the local iwi authority and the Wanganui District Council will employ up to 25 people in its first 12 months.
Mr Mair says on top of that Whanganui rate payers will be relieved to know not one cent was used in the set up costs for the recycling plant.
He says the new recycling centre will also be environmentally sound which is supported by Ngati Tupoho and the district and regional councils.
