$27m for Maori education strategy

The Government is making a second attempt at breathing more life into a Maori education strategy by investing more money in it.

It has announced a $27 million suite of initiatives aimed at lifting achievement among the poorest students.

One is the expansion of the Ka Hikitia strategy, which the Auditor-General said was poorly introduced five years ago; it will have $8 million poured into it over four years.

Education Minister Hekia Parata says the difference this time around is that Maori parents will be given more support to encourage their children's learning, not only at school but at home.

The two main areas which will raise achievement among Maori primary school children are the quality of teaching and the quality of leadership, she says.

However, Ms Parata says the two biggest areas outside of school that need boosting are getting more Maori parents engaged with their children's learning and teachers, and giving them more confidence to read to their tamariki at home.
